Summicron 28mm bested
This is a great little lens. Optically it's peerless for a 28mm RF lens, even compared to Leica's latest improved 28mm Summicron. Voigtländer corrected the lens to real APO standards meaning low color fringing, low color error in defocused highlights, and extreme sharpness to the very corners. The Apo Lanthar's corner vignetting is lower than the Summicron too, and background defocused blur is also a bit less busy than the Leica lens. Leica does win on its ability to focus a bit closer: Leica (0.4M, 15.75"), Voigtländer (0.5M, 19.69"); but the Apo Lanthar 28mm has floating element close range correction and I think the Summicron 28mm does not. The Summicron 28mm also has a distinct detent at 0.7M (27.6") to warn Leica M camera users that they must switch from rangefinder focusing to EVF/LV for closer work, but the Apo Lanthar lacks this warning feature so it's important to be aware of when the RF patch stops moving when using the Voigtländer lens for close ups.
